About This Position

R+A is seeking a new senior staff member to build upon and expand our expertise in health and environmental justice practice. The position offers the opportunity to integrate health, equity, and authentic community engagement into planning and design projects in a way that advances the field. The ideal candidate will strengthen our existing relationships and build new partnerships with planning, public health, and environmental justice leaders, organizations, and firms.

The candidate will work on a wide variety of projects currently underway at R+A, including community health and environmental justice components of General Plans; Health Impact Assessment; and other studies and commissions focused on equity and environmental justice. The candidate will oversee the use of quantitative and geospatial methods to evaluate how changes in the physical, social, economic, and environmental conditions may impact health outcomes. Other responsibilities include preparing equity analyses that address community health and the built environment and preparing policy recommendations. Experience with engaging a diversity of stakeholders and facilitating difficult and contentious discussions is a must.

Candidates will be expected to take initiative, work independently, manage multiple projects concurrently, supervise and mentor staff and consultants, be an excellent collaborator, and represent the firm professionally. The candidate will work closely with senior management to shape and expand the strategic direction of the firm; identify new opportunities to integrate health and equity into all of the firms planning and urban design projects; and standardize methodologies for assessing the health, environmental justice, and equity impacts of land use and development decisions.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience. A significant portion must be work completed in California
  • Excellent research, analytical, writing, and oral communication skills
  • Experience leading community engagement programs in diverse communities
  • Proven commitment to incorporating community health, environmental justice, and equity into local and regional planning and urban design processes
  • Proven ability to grow a practice area of a company, agency, or other organization
  • Understanding of California planning law and the implementation of SB 1000
  • Ability to manage projects, work with diverse teams, mentor staff members, and communicate effectively
