The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning (DURP) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor in international environmental planning. We are seeking a new colleague whose research is on environmental planning issues (for example climate change adaptation, natural hazards, environmental justice, water and air pollution, or urban sustainability) in the Global South (namely Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean). The successful candidate will play an active role in undergraduate teaching and advising to strengthen our Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Planning (BAUSP) concentration in Global Cities and will contribute to curriculum in our graduate Transnational Planning Stream. The successful candidate should have an interest in preparing students for planning practice in international contexts.

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning celebrated one hundred years of planning education at Illinois in 2013 and has an international reputation for training professional planners and developing future scholars. DURP is

ranked among the top 10 planning programs in the nation (5th edition, the Planetizen Guide); the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a land grant R1 institution. The campus and the Department provide ample support for faculty to conduct interdisciplinary research and innovative teaching. Members of the DURP faculty are involved in a broad array of ongoing research and public engagement activities throughout Illinois, the U.S., and internationally. Faculty members in DURP are expected to produce a strong published record of scholarship and to maintain an active research agenda in their field. The Department places a high value on professional applications that lead to innovations in planning practice and dissemination of those innovations through scholarly publication and other means of communication. DURP faculty contribute courses to the Department’s three degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Planning (BAUSP), Master of Urban Planning (MUP), and Ph.D. in Regional Planning. They also secure funding to support masters and doctoral student research assistants. Beyond the unit, the new faculty member will contribute to an interdisciplinary, sustainability-focused degree under development in the University’s College of Fine and Applied Arts where DURP is housed.

DURP currently has 15 full-time faculty members in addition to its adjunct and affiliate faculty, 81 students in the BAUSP program, 54 students in the MUP program, and 18 Ph.D. students. Its curricular offerings span sustainable design and development, community development for social justice, local and regional economic development, and land use and transportation concentrations, as well as a cross cutting transnational planning specialization. A Ph.D. in planning or related fields is required. ABD candidates will be considered. The position is a full-time nine- month tenure-track faculty appointment that begins 16 August 2019. Salary is commensurate with experience.
