What is a planners network local chapter?

A Planners Network local chapter is an independent group that promotes the Planners Network principles of social, economic, and environmental justice at the local level. Chapters determine their own structure, activities, and decision-making processes.

What can a chapter do?

  • Organize local community events, such as forums, speaker panels, film screenings, workshops, or walking tours
  • Engage in popular education, for example by writing articles or distributing informational materials
  • Organize and endorse advocacy campaigns to bring attention to and influence local or national planning issues in the chapter’s city and country
  • Facilitate local and regional networking and communication between people interested in progressive planning
  • Contribute to Planners Network activities, such as the annual conference, Progressive Planning magazine, e-newsletter, website, and listservs

What can a chapter not do?

  • Act in a way that contradicts the Planners Network Statement of Principles
  • Act in the name of Planners Network without endorsement from the Planners Network Steering Committee. Chapters should otherwise identify themselves as local chapters – for example, Planners Network New York Chapter.

How do chapters contribute to planners network?

  • Actively and critically engage in local planning issues
  • Promote progressive planning, Planners Network, and Progressive Planning magazine at the local level
  • Send updates to Planners Network for inclusion in the e-newsletter, magazine, and website
  • Contribute to and help organize Planners Network conferences and conference sessions

How can planners network support local chapters?

  • Free brochures, Progressive Planning magazines, and other materials for promotional purposes
  • Free promotion through the Planners Network website, e-newsletter, listservs, and Progressive Planning magazine
  • Access to Planners Network member resources, experience, and guidance
  • Connections with other local chapters, linking local actions to larger networks
