Planners Network 2007 Conference | University of New Orleans | May 30 - June 2

Race, Class and Community Recovery:
From the Neighborhood to the Nation and Beyond

The Planners Network 2007 Conference took place in New Orleans, Louisiana, from May 30 to June 2. This website is an archive of the conference website, and is for reference only.

GETTING AROUND AT THE CONFERENCE

To and from Louis Armstrong International Airport:

Shuttle

Shuttles depart Louis Armstrong International Airport every 15 minutes for hotels in downtown New Orleans, including the French Quarter, as well as select locations throughout the city (for a list of available shuttle destinations, see the website below).

Cost for a shuttle ticket is $13 either from or to the airport.  For departures, 24-hour advance notice should be given prior to flight time for pick-up.

One-way or roundtrip tickets for shuttle service are available at the shuttle ticket counter on the baggage claim level of the airport, or can be pre-purchased by calling 1-866-596-2699 or at:

http://www.airportshuttleneworleans.com/.

Note: Baggage on shuttle service is limited to three average sized personal items.  ADA accessible shuttles require reservations 48 hours in advance.

Cab

Cab rates between the airport and most of the city, including downtown, are fixed at $28 for one or two passengers, or $12 per person for three or more passengers.  Taxis queue outside of the ground floor baggage claim.

Auto Rental & Ridesharing

Seven car rental services operate out of the airport.  Due to the distance between accommodations and the University of New Orleans’ campus, the occasional limitations of New Orleans public transportation, and the expense of taxi travel, car rental is suggested for conference attendees.

Availability, rates and reservations for car rental service can be obtained at any one of these company’s websites:

www.alamo.com

www.avis.com

www.budget.com

www.enterprise.com

www.hertz.com

www.nationalcar.com

www.thrifty.com

Opportunities may be available to share the expense of a rental with fellow visitors.  To post or respond to requests for rideshares, please visit http://pn2007.informe.com/.

Public Transportation to and from the Airport

Bus service does connect the airport to the New Orleans downtown.  However, this service is split between two systems (Jefferson Transit and the New Orleans Regional Transit Agency) and several transfers will be required.  Relying on shuttle, taxi, or rental service is recommended over taking the bus.  More information on Public Transportation in New Orleans is available below.

To and from The Lindy Boggs Conference Center

The Lindy Boggs Conference Center is located on the University of New Orleans campus, on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain, approximately seven miles north of downtown.  Regrettably, there are no hotels in the immediate area of the University, and most accommodations are located downtown or near to downtown.

Due to the length of the trip and roadway conditions between the two locations, walking or bicycling from downtown to the UNO Campus is not recommended.

We are currently looking into running shuttles to and from downtown during the day, although this option is still pending, and will not likely be available for evening events.  Again, car rentals and ridesharing should be considered.

Transportation will be provided for all mobile workshops.

Directions to the conference center from the downtown area can be found at http://conferences.uno.edu/directions.html.

Cab rides to the Lindy Boggs Conference Center

The current rate for taxi travel in the city is $1.60 per mile with a $2.50 drop charge (and an additional $1.00 drop charge for each additional passenger). A taxi ride from downtown to the Lindy Boggs Conference Center will probably cost about $13 to $15

Listed below are a few of the companies that provide taxi service throughout the New Orleans metropolitan area, including to and from the Lindy Boggs Conference Center.  Though you will probably be able flag down a taxi near the larger hotels downtown, it’s generally best to call for pick-up.

United Cabs Inc. 504-522-9771 or 504-524-9606

King Cab Company 504-469-5464 or 504-620-1200

                         White Fleet Cabs 504-822-3800

Public Transportation to the Lindy Boggs Conference Center

Current bus schedules and system maps are available at http://www.norta.com/routes.php.  Note that the University of New Orleans is located at the northernmost stops of the Elysian Fields line (55) and the St. Barnard Line (57).

Fares for NORTA are $1.25 per trip (cash only, no change) with an additional $0.25 per transfer (request a transfer ticket from the driver).  A 3-day pass can be purchased for $12 at locations listed at http://www.norta.com/vendors.php.

NORTA service doesn’t always follow the exact schedule listed on the website, and transfers may take time, so a fair amount of pre-planning, as well as patience, may be required if you are going to rely on New Orleans public transportation during your visit.  Generally speaking, buses will appear at downtown stops every 15 to 20 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends.

NORTA is very accommodating in assisting with route planning. Requests for information should be directed to their ride-line at 504-248-3900 or to rideline@norta.com.

Riding a Bike in NOLA

Riding a bike in New Orleans is a great way to feel the city and to get around conveniently and sustainably.  Downtown, French Quarter, Bywater/Marigny, Warehouse District, Garden District and Mid City are all within 15 minutes' ride from each other.  In that sense, its a great means of transit for those who are able to ride.

Attendees who love to ride and feel comfortable riding in traffic and/or riding an occasional 3-5 miles can definitely do so at the conference.  Many locals ride bikes around the FQ and surrounding neighborhoods; a bike would be a great way to get around the central areas of the city with minimal cost and hassle.

The main challenge will be cycling from UNO into the downtown area.  This would take about 20-35 minutes depending on your speed and ability.  The route to Downtown from UNO is safe, except for one bridge without much room for bikes; the sidewalk here is wide and above grade so many people choose to walk their bikes there.  Alternatively, there is a direct bus line from UNO to the French Quarter that runs every 30 mins during the week and every hour on the weekend; buses are equipped with bike racks.  The bus is the #55 Elysian Fields (

And of course in New Orleans, there is always a question of safety.  There is no place in New Orleans that is 100% crime-free.  All attendees, regardless of their mode of transportation, should excercise caution and be alert throughout the city.

Here are some websites which may be helpful for those attendees who are considering riding a bike in NOLA:
